Exclusive Mini Mix + Interview from Sheevy for OC EDM’s Launch! [Download]

On November 27, 2012 by ocedm

In order to celebrate the launch of the new site, I asked Sheevy to create a high energy mini mix. I’ve been talking to him for a couple months now, and his different take on ash ups have been pretty cool. I’ll just say that this mix does not disappoint. Sheevy takes some tracks from well known artists such as Knife Party, Tommy Trash, and TJR and creates some sick mash ups with songs you would never even think of putting together. Some of these exclusive mash ups have three or even four tracks fused together! Check out my interview with Sheevy below and don’t forget to download this exclusive mini mix!

First off, tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Krystian, but I prefer being called Sheevy. Currently, I’m living in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, but there are some plans to go abroad after I finish my studies. It’s an open decision where I’ll land, and if it’s gonna be USA, I just HAVE to visit your area.

How did you start getting into the dance music?

I’ve been around music since I can remember. Two of my cousins play in a metal band, with my sister as the lead singer. As for me, I was always open minded. In 2005, I was basically listening to rap and metal. Then a friend sent me A State of Trance 283 by Armin Van Buuren, which made me fall in love with EDM. Before this actually, I was a pretty successful soccer player until I hurt my knee. I chose music as something to take up my free time. In 2008, I recorded my first set. The next year I made my first remix, and in 2010 I made my first track. Now I’m having a lot of fun creating mash ups.

What is the scene like in Poland?

To be honest, it’s nothing to compare with the scene in the USA. I know that some of my fellow countrymen might be upset if they read this, but the truth is EDM isn’t the most popular dance music in our media, which is a shame. When you turn on the radio in Holland/England, there is a big chance that you’ll be listening to some good EDM. When you turn on the dance radio here, there is a big chance that your ears will be raped again and again by Rihanna or Pitbull. But there is progress. Festivals are growing bigger, and slowly the non-commercial radio channels are competing with the pop ones. Polish producers are making good some stuff as well, such as one of my favorites Tom Swoon (who was known as Pixel Cheese). Our main producers here are mainly trance, but now we can have some decent progressive house guys. I’m happy with that.

How do you go about getting your name out to the world?

I like to play very hard and give everyone an opportunity to let them go wild on the dance floor. As of right now, Polish clubs are full of the lighter genres of EDM. Let’s get this straight – if you don’t have a recognizable name out there, you can’t play hard. I was amazed when I saw the review of my mashup on your site, simply because I wasn’t prepared for it. People here would rather call it shit, than dance under these kind of sounds.

Have you had any trouble getting shows at such a relatively young age?

I was so stressed out till couple days before my first event last week! But after I listened to CDs I made, I was assured that it was gonna be massive. It was the first party when I could play music that really fits my style, which was the best thing I ever done so far. There were some problems with my mixing technique, since I was playing for the first time with pro hardware, but it was great experience. (Check out the event flyer HERE.)

OC EDM has posted some of your mash ups, gathering hundreds of views for your songs. Which has been your favorite and why?

And I’m truly thankful for it! I have 2 favourites at the moment, Flying DAYM Bacon Friends, which was made from four tracks and has huge energy, and Ode to Truffle Pig for its vibe.

What have people said about your music so far?

I don’t want to sound like I’m proud of myself or something, but lots of people are fascinated with my fresh music taste. Yesterday, some of my “electro friends” came to my place, when I was listening to some trap. Their jaws dropped to the floor. Thankfully, I can still see a LOADS of mistakes in my technique, so I can still improve.

Who has been your biggest influence so far?

It’s definitely been Rafael Fang, who is my first mentor. He started me in trance, and thanks to that, I’m still exploring new sounds. He was the only person who would call my work shit, when everybody else said they liked it. He was pointing to the major mistakes and helped me improve a lot. And he was pretty crazy – I just love crazy people! I met him on a New Years Eve event. He made the 8k people went crazy, just like him. (Check out the event HERE.)

Any advice for other new producers/DJ’s out there?

Produce music as much as you can. It’s the only way to make progress. And try to meet other and more experienced DJs/Producers. Their tips can really make the difference!
