Ethic - What Ya Call ME EP + Exclusive Interview

Instead of today being called Tuesday, I am now proclaiming that it be called Dubsday, courtesy of British producer Ethic. His “What Ya Call Me” EP contains four tracks, ranging from future sounds to high energy, from halfstep to twostep. The EP marks Richard Follett’s debut with Dub Police, a record label that has released tunes by the likes of Doctor P, Emalkay, Rusko, and Trolley Snatcha. Hand picked by Caspa himself, Ethic shows why the dubstep legend has such faith in him with his unique and distinctive sound. Consisting of the title track “What Ya Call Me”, as well as “Temple Run”, “Rise To Glory”, and “Embrace”, Ethic proves why he has seen support from massive names in the scene.

I had a chance to ask Ethic some questions about his influences, what this EP means to him, and what the future holds for the young producer. Read on below:

Hey Ethic, thanks for taking the time to talk to me. First off, tell us a little bit about yourself…

You’re welcome, thanks for getting in touch! I’m Richard Follett and live in a town called Woking in Surrey, UK. I started learning to mix and produce Drum n Bass when I was 13, then moved on to Dubstep later on.

Who are your biggest influences as a producer?

Honestly, my biggest influences are the Dub Police family. I’ve been a fan for years and take so much inspiration from the music these guys make. That and Fatboy Slim!

How did you get involved with Caspa and the Dub Police team?

Well I’ve known Subscape for many years and was lucky enough to meet The Others at a music academy back in 2007. So I’ve been able to learn a lot from these guys, send them my tracks and network to get to know the team behind Dub Police. I’ve learnt so much and my production has come a long way!

What does your “What Ya Call Me” EP say about you?

I want it to show listeners that I’m a producer who likes to try different styles when writing. Hopefully this shines through with my debut EP. That’s why I’ve called it What Ya Call Me as it’s asking the listener what to call it themselves, if that makes sense!? Haha.

What can we look forward to from you in the future?

There is a remix of a Stenchman track I should be releasing very soon on Antics Records, and I’m writing tunes for my next EP on Dub Police too so watch this space!
