Variations - Be Seeing You EP + Interview + Mix

“Be Seeing You” is the name of UK duo Variations newest EP, which is out today on Dub Police. Thom Clarke and Nick Bartlett make up the pair of producers, who have seen radio support from Skream, Benga, Subscape, Doctor P, 12th Planet, Plastician, and Jakes. The EP is comprised of three tracks: “Endlessly Empty”, “Subbington, and “Ermahgerd”, with the last tune being named exactly what I said when I heard it for the first time. The guys also did a mix for DJ Mag, which you can also check out below.

Read on for an interview about Variations on their name, label head Caspa, and the future of dubstep!

Hey guys thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. How did you guys get together and start producing as a duo?

We’ve been friends for 15 years since school, and we’ve always made music together in some shape or form. We were in a metal band together and producing records, but then we started to tackle electronic music around 6 years ago. We started out making liquid Drum and Bass but really got into Dubstep around 2009 when we first saw Caspa and Benga live.

Where did the name “Variations” come from?

When we started out in electronic music we wanted to keep exploring different things. We were working on a leftfield 170 BPM piece called ‘Variations on a Theme’ and just decided to roll with that really!

How have you grown since your “Thanks For Coming EP” last year?

We’ve just been working on becoming better producers and keep exploring different areas of 140. We’ve tried to blur the lines between subgenres a little. The scene is continually changing and rather than trying too hard to sound fresh we always try to make tracks that make us feel something.

How has Caspa helped you transition to his Dub Police label?

He’s just been supporting the music since the beginning. Caspa’s a busy guy but always gives us a shout for a chat and some good guidance. We still kind of feel like the new guys on the label but we’ve had some humbling support and the lads are all wicked.

Where do you see Dubstep going in the next couple of years?

The cool thing is it’s a bit unknown and that makes it exciting. Different sounds are starting to segment again to different club nights, but there are a lot of deeper sounds emerging again similar to a few years ago. The crazy hype around it has died down a little so the people that come to the shows are really into it and keeping the scene going. There’s definitely something exciting brewing again now that all the scene kids have moved on.

If you could collaborate with any artists, who would it be and why?

Difficult to say which producers, as there is so much talent out there but there are a few vocalists that spring to mind:

Thom Yorke. Absolute genius. We’d go in so deep and utterly mental. His voice hypnotizes us.

Chino Moreno has always been our favourite vocalist. Everything he touches is gold. It would be cool to see what we’d actually come out with. So chilled.

Miley Cyrus so we could make a fucking shitload of cash and then return to making music with meaning in greater comfort.
