Knife Party - Abandon Ship (Album Review)

If you haven’t heard already, Knife Party’s debut album “Abandon Ship” was accidentally released three weeks early by iTunes…oops. Nevertheless, the album by Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen shot up to number three on the iTunes Top Albums Chart, and currently sits at number 9. This album is something that everyone has been waiting for a long time now, especially with all the delays that have been involved.

“Abandon Ship” was originally scheduled to be released on October 27th, just in time for the Halloween weekend. Then on October 15th, Swire announced that it was pushed back to November 10th due to reasons out of the Australian duos control. A November 3rd announcement stated that “after lengthy discussions with the powers that be we can’t get the album in shops any quicker than Nov 24th“.

This past Friday, iTunes somehow managed to accidentally put “Abandon Ship” on their site and was noticed immediately. Rather than make a big deal of it and try to get it taken down, Knife Party said “Abandon Ship is now live on iTunes. Happy Friday!“. And what a happy Friday it was!

Consisting of 12 diverse and well produced tracks, the guys have played songs from the album in their sets the past couple of months leading up to the release. Although the tracks were in various demo forms and studio versions, it gave a taste of what was to come for their fans. Three songs were also put out officially before the album was to be released, including “Resistance“, “Boss Mode“, and “Begin Again“.

As for the album as a whole, it varies in genres and forms. Ranging from hard and heavy (“404“) to deep and groovy (EDM Trend Machine“), it amazes me how Knife Party can switch up their styles so effortlessly. The album was released by Earstorm Records and Big Beat Records, labels in which Knife Party has put out tracks from before. It’s awesome to see that the labels didn’t put a restriction on what the guys could create or tell them what style to produce depending on what’s currently “in” now.

But enough of me talking. Hit play on Knife Party’s debut album “Abandon Ship” and find yourselves thoroughly entertained for the next 56 minutes and 27 seconds.
