The Others – MyStyle 004 (1 Hour Mix) + Interview

The fourth edition of Dub Police’s MyStyle series was put together by rising dubstep producer The Others. Follwoing in the path of Caspa, D1, and Subscape, the London based artist, also known as Alex Crawford, threw in some of his own original mixes, as well as a VIP and remix or two. Also included in the 28 track mix are tunes by J:Kenzo, Variations, Subscape, Mydas, and more exclusives from some talented artists. Although the compilation mix won’t be released until November 17th, the promo mix below should be able to hold you over until Monday. I had a chance to ask The Others to select five tracks from the mix and give us a little background information on them, such as why he chose that track for the mix, how it stands out from the sea of other songs, how he came to collaborate with the other artists on the tune, etc. The links for the songs are embedded in the title of the track, if applicable.

Five standout tracks from the MyStyle 004 mix compilation, described by The Others:

1. The Others – All The Way Down

Personally this is one of my favourite tracks I’ve written in a long time. It takes influences from many different places and I spent a great deal of time tweaking, experimenting and combining ideas to get the end result. I’m very happy with it. It reflects the overall sound of the mix very well, as well as where my sound is at right now.

2. Icicle – Need A Job VIP

Icicle is an artist who I’m really feeling at the moment. He’s got a new album on the way and it’s sounding amazing! He sent me this track last year and it’s been a permanent fixture in my sets ever since. It’s hard to even put my finger on why it works so well but it’s just got so much energy and is always fun to mix.

3. Sleeper – Civil War (feat. Jamakabi)

Again this is a track that has been doing the rounds for a while now and has been a mainstay in my sets this year. Jamakabi’s vocals fit so well over the rough beats layered down by Sleeper, who is really pushing the boundaries with his music at the moment. It’s got bundles of energy but it’s not over the top, and fits in this mix perfectly.

4. The Others & J:Kenzo – The Prophecy

J:Kenzo is another artist who I think has been killing it this year and someone who I’ve been wanting to work with for a while now. It’s a good balance of both of our sounds and exactly what I had in mind when we sat down to write a track together. The track came about after Kenzo showed me the trailer for the latest Godzilla movie earlier this year – it’s basically our musical vision of that film.

5. Minzo – Fatal

I’m actually pretty bad at searching out new artists usually, but with MyStyle 004 I was adamant I wanted some new talent to be showcased within the mix. I discovered Minzo by just throwing up a Facebook post asking to hear people’s music. He sent me a link to his SoundCloud and it really stood out to me. It’s a great track and judging by what else I’ve heard from him, he’s got a very bright future ahead of him.
