Nadastrom – Nadastrom (Album)
If the name Nadastrom doesn’t sound familiar to you, you should really look into them. The Washington, D.C. natives Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom compose the duo that have been at the forefront of the moombahton sound since its creation in 2009. And rightfully so, since Nada was the one who developed the style at his cousin’s house party in D.C. The name comes from a mix of two works: “Moombah“, a track by Chuckie and Silvio Ecomo in which Nada slowed down Afrojack’s Dutch house remix of the song to create the moombahton sound, and “reggaeton”. By slowing down the track from 128 BPM to 1o8 BPm, the moombahton sound was born.
Now that the brief moombahton history lesson is over, let’s get on with their debut album, the self titled “Nadastrom”. The 11 track set (12 on iTunes and Bandcamp) comes to us from Friends of Friends Music, a record label based out of Los Angeles who also represent Jerome LOL, Salva, and Shlohmo. The album does not scream moombahton, but you can still hear the influence in the melodic tracks.
The basslines are some of the smoothest and grooviest I’ve heard in a long time. Exhibit A: Listen to “Fallen Down”, “Go Back”, and “Kids”. Most of the tunes border on the edge of house and minimal techno, allowing the guys to express themselves in a different way than we might be used to hearing from them. These are songs that you can listen to in depth and appreciate the little subtleties or as background music to nod your head to.
Back in 2011, I saw Nadastrom perform for the first time and they blew my mind. As soon as I walked into the venue, my throat was instantly vibrating like crazy…and I loved it. It was amazing to hear moombahton live for the first time and it is something I will definitely never forget. To hear the guys change up their noted style for this EP shows how they are willing to evolve and transform themselves without any limits.
