Opiuo – Omniversal LP

Opiuo first came on to my radar when I heard his song “Life” ft. Gift Of Gab and Syreneiscreamy a while back. I’ve been following the Melbourne based artist ever since as he’s pushed his technique and creativity beyond the usual. Oscar Davey-Wraight, who was born in New Zealand, starts off his Facebook biography with “Ever wanted some extra funk in your life? What about some warm syrupy bass sauce to compliment your daily adventure?” All that is true and then some once you finish listening to “Omniversal”, his third album.

For the most part, a good selection of the songs go along his well known glitch hop and future funk route, featuring a clean production style and grooving beats. However, there’s a few techno-like tunes included as well that are certainly a breath of fresh air. “Waxomole”, “Jelly” featuring Texture Like Sun, and “Pumpernickel” featuring Hypnotech are a few of my favorites.

As an added bonus, Opiuo is now on tour to promote “Omniversal” and will be playing at The Roxy in West Hollywood this Saturday, June 11th and at The Music Box in San Diego this Sunday, June 12th.
