SUAHN – Close Your Eyes (Original Mix) [Free Download]

SUAHN’s social media bio across various platforms succinctly states “distort everything”. That being said, it would make sense that there is plenty of distortion in his latest track called “Close Your Eyes” on Jadū Dala, the record label from Nathaniel Kosko and Jesse Babini they launched in Philadelphia in 2016.

Michael York, who began his musical career as a guitarist in the post-hardcore band Pianos Become The Teeth, says that “At the heart of it, ‘Close Your Eyes’ is my version of a hard techno song. I typically start every idea I have with something really stripped down and basic and then decide which element has the role as the heart of the song. Even at my most chaotic, there’s typically a singular element that everything else revolves around. ‘Close Your Eyes’ started as a rolling 808 pattern that I made originally at around 90bpm with some classic hoover synths running on top of them as a simple 8 bar loop.

Then, I asked myself how far I could push that 808 to still resemble the feeling of a techno jam, but more…. intense. I started distorting everything, pitching things around randomly, sped the song up by 35 BPM from where it originally was, and what started to emerge was the beginnings of what the song ended up being. It only has maybe 15-20 tracks in the entire project. I usually try and get my idea across using as few tracks as possible and trying to work within the limitations of that. Using hardware whenever possible, outboard gear, pedals, anything that I can actually manipulate in real-time. The interesting things that happen when you’re working with outboard gear, drum machines, synths, etc. are where the beauty in making music and art lie, for me anyway. I am always trying to catch lightning in a bottle and when it happens, I do my best to not overthink it and continue building around that feeling.”

Last week SUAHN was part of Boombox Cartel’s Cinco Mode livestream last week on May 5, saying “Not only is this my first livestream, it is the culmination of a year or so worth of music I’ve been working on and a complete visual live show to accompany it.”
