syence – Bass Pop EP + Interview

On November 30, 2021 by ocedm

If you guessed that the syence duo decided on their name after they first met in a science class at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, you would amazingly be correct. Zach Montoya and Brayden James have a new five track EP out now called “Bass Pop” featuring warm, bouncy basslines and captivating vocals throughout the set.

Included in the EP are “Truth” featuring San Clemente based Kyle Reynolds, “Talking Way Too Much”, “Hate Me Like U Love Me” featuring Nashville based Jake Neumar, “Think About U”, “and “Meet Somebody”. The EP was put out on Create Music Group in Los Angeles, which was founded in 2015.

Read on for an interview with the guys as they talk about how they would describe their sound in three animals, their first impressions of each other, how they connected with each vocalist, and more!

What’s up syence, thanks for taking the time to have a quick chat! What’s been the most memorable moment of the year for both of you so far?

Definitely our show with Zedd out in Boston. That weekend we got to go and meet a bunch of amazing music industry people at Electric Zoo and then the following day played a sold out show of 2k+ people at Big Night Live in Boston (shoutout Big Night team!!!). We had a great time hanging with Zedd and his team after and had tons of friends out to the show who were up with us until the very late hours of the night which is always fun.

How would you describe your sound in three animals, and why those animals?

Bass (fish) – because we call it bass pop and bass and bass are spelled the same so that’s an easy one.

Dogs – Dogs are tight and we think our music is tight. Plus everyone loves dogs and we hope everyone loves our music!!!

Bees – Bees are dying at an alarming rate so we’re just putting this to raise awareness.

You guys originally met in a science class at Cal Poly SLO. What were your first impressions of each other and did you think you would get to where you are today?

In general we just thought the other was chill and we had some cool stuff in common like music taste and going out/being social etc. We had absolutely no idea we would even make music together until a quarter or two later so the fact that it started there and we’re now here is just wild to say the least.

Your “Bass Pop” EP has just been released and features collaborations with Kyle Reynolds and Jake Neumar. How did you first connect with each of the guys and when did you know each track was a finished product?

We met Kyle in Nashville at the Nashville Electronic Writers Retreat back in 2018 or 2017. We did a session but that song didn’t go anywhere unfortunately. However, we stayed in touch and have loved seeing his career progress. We finally got “Truth” going about a year ago or so and now it’s finally out!

We Jake met online because he put out a few songs with our friend Daniel Allan so we reached out via Instagram and had him help write a topline over what is now “Hate U Like U Love Me”.

What are you looking forward to most in 2022?

Hopefully Covid to be over…please?

But other than that we have some bomb releases lined up for early 2022 so we’re really excited about that and then hoping to continue playing some dope festivals and shows throughout the year and seeing new places across the US.
