On March 18, 2022 by ocedm

Lucille Croft has penned a new chapter in her career with the release of her debut EP titled “PATIENT X”. The Australian DJ and producer released her five track midtempo set from her own record label called This Is Bad Wolf. The bass heavy EP with industrial elements consists of “Post Human”, “Seduce / Destroy”, “Kill The Machine”, “Out For Blood”, and “More Blood”.

Read on for an interview with Lucille Croft as she talks about how she would describe her sound in three animals, her new style moving forwards, and other artists to watch for!

Hey Lucille, appreciate you having a quick chat with me today. How have the first few months of 2022 been for you so far?

Busy! I became a post-human, escaped the Bad Wolf HQ lab, I’ve been doing shows around Australia. It’s been manic, but in a fun way.

How would you describe your sound in three animals, and why those animals?

Wolf – I love what wolves represent so much, I named my label ‘This Is Bad Wolf’ and my blog ‘For The Wolves’ after them. I love wolves because they don’t take shit, they’re independent and they lead. They’re also cute, but have a hard bite.

Shark – sharks can only swim forward. I’m not the most technical producer, I make sounds, once it sounds good, I move on. I don’t ‘over-produce’ my music.

Jellyfish – alien-like, immortal, look like they’re not from this world.

Your new EP called “PATIENT X” was recently independently released on your label This Is Bad Wolf. What does the EP say about you and your style moving forwards?

The Patient X EP is a statement, and a proof of concept as to where I’m taking the Lucille Croft brand. I chose to go independent after having some absolutely terrible experiences with major labels. I wanted to prove to myself, and the world, that I don’t need a major label. What’s interesting is that my independent releases have all been my biggest songs, and received the most support, and playlisting. I’m open to working with labels in the future, but I want to be able to prove that I don’t ‘need’ them. Patient X is a proof of concept of how extreme and crazy I’m taking the brand, and how there’s going to be music, but also characters, stories, fashion, art, there’s going to be a whole world for listeners to immerse themselves into.

How long did it take from when you first started the EP to when you were satisfied with the final product? Any challenges along the way?

The project took around a year. I was travelling around Australia – trying to avoid lockdowns, working with new people, in different studios. The music was one part, then there way the story, scripts, the visual assets etc. I’m already working on the next body of work, now that I’ve worked out how to do everything, I imagine this one will be quicker.

I saw that you recently received your US visa, congrats! Any upcoming shows here that you can share with us?

Thank you! So far I believe we’ve only announced Bonnaroo and Forecastle Festival, there’s a lot more to announce…

Favorite song of 2021: Supersonic – with Skrillex, Josh Pan, Noisia and Dylan Brady. From the moment the song begins with the panned melody, then Josh Pan’s beautiful haunting voice coming in, I was sold. There’s such incredible sound design in this song, and there’s so much depth in the mix.

Best track to play at peak time: Lucille Croft – Control (Original Mix)

Producer(s) and/or vocalist(s) you’d most like to work with: Trent Reznor / Nine Inch Nails, Rico Nasty, Oli Sykes / Bring Me The Horizon, Pussy Riot, Boys Noize, Slayyyter, Grimes, HEALTH, Ho99o9.

Upcoming artist(s) to watch for in 2022: Me, AWAY, TINYKVT, 3teeth, Wargasm, Bad/Love.
