Spencer Brown & Qrion – 20ms (Original Mix)

No strangers to working with each other, San Francisco based Spencer Brown and Japanese artist Qrion have teamed up once again on “20ms”. A catchy rhythm and tight percussion are used with an infectious beat in the track released on diviine, the record label started by Brown in 2022. The song serves as the second single from his album to be released in the fall, following up last months “Awu Wemadoda” with Wilt Claybourne and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Brown shares that “Qrion and I have incredible chemistry in the studio because of our deep friendship; we always work in the same room, never online. When we are making tracks, it feels like we are casually hanging out, not sitting down with any intentions. “20ms” perfectly captures our playfulness in the studio. All the synths and bass in the track were made with a Korg MS-20 while I was visiting Austin, Texas. Neither of us knew how to use the synth properly, but we recorded some experiments while fidgeting with knobs.”

He continues “If we had to recreate the track, it would be impossible. The synth was not quantized to any sort of grid. We captured the randomness of exploring the synth like children while catching up on our personal lives, and “20ms” was born once we programmed a strong groove. The track has been a staple in both of our sets, and we are pleased to share it with the world.”

Spencer Brown has released some of my favorite EPs over the past number of years, including “Reforma / Polybomba“, “I Was Too Young for 90s Raves“, and “Windows 95 on Acid“. A few weeks ago, he started his Equanimity tour in support of his album, with stops in San Diego at Spin on Friday October 20 and in Los Angeles at The Vermont Hollywood on Saturday October 21.

Momiji Tsukada, a native of Sapporo who is now based in Austin, Texas, released her debut album “I Hope It Lasts Forever” in 2021 on Anjunadeep, and is also known for tracks such as “What U Feel” with Spencer Brown and her “Sine Wave Party” EP. She will be the special guest for Rinzen on Friday October 6 at Future Factory in Los Angeles.
