Zomboy & Phocust – February 23 (Time Nightclub, Costa Mesa) + Interview with Phocust

On February 18, 2024 by ocedm

The first time I heard of Phocust was back in 2022 when he released his track “Digital Love” from Flux Pavilion and Doctor P’s Circus Records. Since then, Tyler Shiffer has played at clubs in Los Angeles such as Exchange and Academy, as well as won the Discovery Project for Apocalypse: Zombieland 2023, which was chosen by Zomboy.

This Friday February 23, Phocust will be supporting Zomboy at Time Nightclub in Costa Mesa, along with Focuss of Los Angeles and Hadez of San Diego. He also just released his latest track called “Halo Beam” from Discovery Project two days ago!

Read on for an interview with Phocust as he talks about how he joined Circus Records, being selected by Zomboy as the Discovery Project winner for Apocalypse: Zombieland, and what to expect at the show!

Hey Phocust! Thank you for your time in answering a few questions. How would you describe your sound in three animals, and why those animals?

Let’s see… 1. Definitely a lion because I’ve used lion growls in my songs many times. 2. Probably some sort of ape because some of my songs make you want to jump around and bang your chest. 3. A raven because some of my songs make you feel like you’re flying but with a moody style.

I first picked up on you in the beginning of 2022 when I heard “Digital Love”. What was the process like in releasing your song from Flux Pavilion and Doctor P’s Circus Records and how has your sound evolved since then?

I love working with the Circus crew, they make a lot of things easy on me so I can focus on making the music. The process was pretty simple, I just sent them a batch of music that they picked from and we used that to set up the next release. I’d say since Digital Love came out my sound has gotten a lot heavier but I still have some tunes that are groovy and melodic like that one too.

Last year, you were selected by Zomboy as the first winner of the Discovery Project for Apocalypse: Zombieland 2023. What was your reaction when you found out and what was the experience like playing an Insomniac festival?

Well I remember I had a voicemail on my phone and I listened to it and it was someone from Insomniac telling me to call them back. So I did that right away (trying not to freak out) and that’s when they told me I won. I was so happy and excited to find out Zomboy actually chose my song. I’ve entered the Discovery Project competition many times before so to finally win felt good. I’ve been to lots of festivals and I have to say Insomniac is one of most professional companies I have seen do bass music festivals. Getting to hear my music on a big system like that was a truly thrilling experience. It was also my first show I’ve ever had pyro at so that will be one for the books.

You’ll be supporting Zomboy on Friday February 23rd at Time Nightclub in Costa Mesa. What can fans expect to hear and see in your set?

I have lots of new originals I plan to play as well as some new collabs. I also have some new visuals I’m excited to debut at Time.

What can we expect from you in 2024?

Lots of new music and hopefully lots of shows & festivals to follow that.

Favorite song of 2023: Skrillex, Joker & Sleepnet – Tears

Best track to play at peak time: Au5 & DNAKM – What You’ve Done

Producers you’d most like to work with: Diesel, Excision, Flux Pavilion, Kai Wachi
