On March 3, 2024 by ocedm

London based Defected Records recently announced the launch of a new label called One People a few weeks ago. Lead by Head of A&R Allan Nicoll (also known as Kid Fonque), it will be “a new label representing a diverse and vibrant tapestry of unique creatives across the Afro electronic spectrum”. Formerly based in Johannesburg in South Africa, Nicoll has been a pioneer of South African and Mzsansi house music and spearheaded his own Selective Sounds radio show and record labels Stay True Sounds and STY TRU BTS.

Alex Wann and Nes Mburu have the unique opportunity to release the first track from One People in their collaboration called “Peperuke”. The French artist and Kenynan singer-songwriter create an Afro house track with organic percussion elements, soft piano chords, and captivating vocals. Check out these videos of the song being played live!

Support for the tune has come from the likes of Armin van Buuren, Ferreck Dawn, Monki, Pete Tong, Danny Howard, Sam Divine, and TCTS.

Over the past year, Paris based Alex Wann has become known for remixes of “Milkshake” by Kelis, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, and “Faded” by ZHU. He will be starting his North American tour soon, with a stop at Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in Los Angeles on Thursday April 4.

Nairobi based Nes Mburu draws inspiration from his Kikuyu and Swahili culture and the diverse rhythms of his homeland. His vocals have been heard on “Goja” with Orkidz, “Nitakushika” with ARCADIA, and “Ringa” with Nüur.
