Osayuki Omo-Uwamere, a Tottenham native with Nigerian roots now based in London, crafts a tune with captivating rhythms and infectious beats combined with soulful vocals. The hypnotic single was put out on the record label that Armin van Buuren, Maykel Piron, and David Lewis started in Amsterdam in 2003.
Read on for an interview with DJ Yuki as she talks about how she would describe her sound in three words, the message of the song, how her Tottenham upbringing and Nigerian roots influenced her style, and more!
What’s up DJ Yuki! What have you been up to today?
Hey! How’s it going? Today has been a vibe. Spent most of it in the studio finishing off some new tracks and managed to squeeze in a quick little workout. I’m gearing up for a set tonight, so just getting into the right headspace.
How would you describe your sound in three animals, and why those animals?
I’d say my sound is like a lion, a peacock, and an eagle. The lion because my sound is powerful and command attention, just like a lion’s roar. The peacock represents the vibrant and colorful elements in my music that make you want to dance. The eagle is Nigeria’s national animal, so it had to be done. It symbolizes the soaring melodies that lift the vibe and take you to another level.
“Pretty Lady (So Divine)” is the title of your new song from the noted record label Armada Music. How did you first connect with them and decide it was the right imprint to release from?
Armada reached out after hearing some of my previous work and I have had a release with them in the past, “Don’t Let It Stop”, a collab with The Melody Men. They loved the unique blend of Afro house with an Afrobeats and London twist that I have been working on. We had some great conversations about the direction of “Pretty Lady (So Divine),” and it just felt like a natural fit. Armada has a global reach and a strong reputation, so I knew they were the right partners for the release.
What is the message you hope people take away after listening to “Pretty Lady (So Divine)”?
“Pretty Lady (So Divine)” is all about celebrating the beauty of women, both inside and outside. I wanted to create a track that uplifts and empowers, something that makes you feel good and confident when you hear it, and of course, makes you want to dance. The message is simple, embrace your divinity, your uniqueness, and let that shine through in everything you do.
How has your Tottenham upbringing and Nigerian roots influenced your musical style?
Growing up in Tottenham, I was surrounded by a melting pot of cultures and sounds. From grime to Afrobeat to house, all of those influences seeped into my music. My Nigerian roots bring in that deep connection to rhythm and percussion, which is at the heart of Afro house. For me, it’s all about blending the traditional with the contemporary, creating something that feels both familiar and fresh.
Has your production style evolved since your 2021 debut track “Weekend Love” with Dante Klein featuring Laura Davie?
Definitely. “Weekend Love” was a great starting point, but I’ve grown a lot as a producer since then. I’ve been experimenting with new sounds, and really honing in on creating tracks that have more of a global vibe. The evolution is all about pushing the boundaries of my sound while staying true to my roots.
Favorite song of 2024:
Honestly, “Move” by Adam Port & Stryv featuring Malachiii, is hands down my favorite track of 2024. It’s one of those tracks that just hits you right from the first beat. You’ve got this deep, driving bassline that keeps you hooked, but then there are these subtle afrobeat influences that give it so much texture and warmth.
As a DJ, when I drop “Move” in a set, you can feel the energy in the room shift. For me, “Move” captures everything that’s exciting about where electronic music is headed right now.
Best track to play at peak time:
For peak time, I’d go with “Gorah” by Nitefreak and Emmanuel Jal. It’s got this incredible energy that really ignites the crowd and just takes over and elevates the entire vibe of the set.
Producer(s) and/or vocalist(s) you’d most like to work with:
So many, Adam Port, Nitefreak, Da Capo, Black Coffee, BLOND:ISH, Kitty Amor, and Junior Simba.
Upcoming artist(s) to watch for in 2025:
There are so many incredible Afro House artists emerging right now that it’s tough to narrow it down to just a few. The genre is in such a vibrant and dynamic space at the moment. We’re seeing a lot of fresh talent bringing new, innovative sounds and perspectives to Afro House. It’s an exciting time because the genre is evolving rapidly, and these new artists are pushing boundaries and redefining what Afro House can be.
