Pendulum – Inertia (Album)
It’s been 15 years since Pendulum last released an album, but who’s counting? A lot of people. A lot of people were counting. Although half the songs from “Inertia” have been released over the years in EPs called “Elemental” in 2021 and “Anima” in 2023, it’s still awesome to have a full collection from Australians Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen, Paul “El Hornet” Harding, Peredur ap Gwynedd, and KJ Sawka. The 16 track set was produced by Rob Swire and Owen Charles and recorded at Pendulum’s London studio and released on Mushroom Music, which was started in 1972 in Melbourne.
Their fourth album follows in the footsteps of “Immersion” in 2010, “In Silico” in 2008, and “Hold Your Colour” in 2005.
Regarding “Inertia”, Swire explains “I was basically testing how far we could push Pendulum. Seeing what we could get away with. I always looked at The Prodigy as the benchmark. They started out as pure rave – breakbeat, hardcore – but they evolved. They became their own sound. You don’t even really associate them with breakbeat anymore. They just are The Prodigy.
That’s always what I wanted for Pendulum. I didn’t want to be locked into drum and bass, or metal, or anything. I just wanted to follow whatever felt right. And that’s been the ongoing challenge – finding that middle ground. If it leans too far one way, it doesn’t feel right.”
The album consists of “Driver”, “Come Alive”, “Save The Cat”, “Archangel”, “Nothing For Free”, “Cannibal” featuring Wargasm, “Constellations”, and “Halo” featuring Bullet For My Valentine.
Also included are “Louder Than Words“”featuring Hybrid Minds, “Napalm” featuring Joey Valence & Brae, “The Endless Gaze”, “Guiding Lights” featuring AWOLNATION, “Colourfast”, “Silent Spinner”, “Mercy Killing” featuring Scarlxrd, and “Cartagena”.
